| MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2009 SEIU: No Shame and No Give Dear Conservatives, Republicans and Independents Looking for Reform, One of the reasons Chicago Democrats and their public sector union financiers have been so successful in advancing policies that have been so destructive to Illinois' well-being is that they never relent. They never give an inch. To what extent? Last week SEIU filed a complaint with the American Arbitration Association (AAA) alleging that the State of Illinois did not maintain its neutrality during last month's election in which SEIU sought to unionize home health care workers for children with disabilities in Illinois. The 3500 families of children with disabilities who participate in the Department of Human Services (DHS) program voted overwhelmingly to reject unionization of home health care workers and, in so doing, voted to prevent SEIU from interjecting itself between parents and their children. SEIU didn't like the outcome so they, of course, demand a new election. SEIU is, however, correct in alleging that the state didn't maintain its neutrality. Thanks to an Executive Order signed by Governor Pat Quinn, the state was decidedly in the corner of SEIU and against the families of children with disabilities. Our campaign stood with these families once this issue came to light. Despite those forces aligned against them, these families targeted by SEIU would not be bullied. They did their own organizing. They stood up for their children's interests. They educated one another on what was happening. They used all legal means at their avail to push back against SEIU's power grab. And others rallied to their defense to bring attention to SEIU's gambit, including Michelle Malkin. The result is that two-thirds of impacted families voted against unionization of the home health care workers. One family leader, Pam Harris, told conservative blog Illinois Review that, "The loud and clear message sent by 66 percent of the voters in the election should have been enough to settle the issue once and for all." Alas, this is Illinois. State government is not set up to represent the interests of Pam Harris or her child. It is set up to serve the interests of public sector unions and their marionettes in Springfield. And so the battle between the most powerful public sector union in this nation and 3500 families of children with disabilities wages on in Illinois. Every Republican and Democrat of conscience should be taking up the fight for these families. Alas, this is Illinois, and most are nowhere to be found. SEIU and the other public sector unions have the game wired. They finance the silence of some and intimidate into inaction others who go-along-to-get-along to protect themselves. It is why I have called for every Republican in this state to stop accepting campaign cash from public sector unions. I do not believe we can credibly take on SEIU and the other grand defenders of the status quo in Springfield and also be on their dole. Two of my opponents who have served in the State Senate for the past 15 years see it differently which is why they are nowhere to be found either. It is on issues like these that we either define our party or allow ourselves to be defined. Do we stand up when we should stand up? Are we willing to take on the schoolyard bullies on behalf of those they believe they can push around with impunity? Will we take the fight or will we continue to rationalize our inaction? My candidacy is for people who play by the rules, looking for a Governor who will take up their fight. When SEIU pokes their finger in my chest, they're going to pull back a broken digit. Sincerely,
Dan Proft |
