Obama Ominously Backburners Terrorism

Lost in the dramatic disaster unfolding on Wall Street and the brazen hypocrisy of the Hillary Clinton nomination is President-elect Obama's double signal that the war on terror is now over.
His appointment of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as secretary of Homeland Security signals that the Department will once again focus on southern border immigration issues rather than on fighting terrorism.
He could have selected a Rudy Giuliani or a Louis Free or a Ray Kelly — anyone with real life experience in battling terrorists. Instead he chose a governor with no knowledge of the subject whose obvious credential is her proximity to the border.
The Department of Homeland Security is a polyglot agency which includes immigration enforcement (the old INS) among its many missions. It is also charged with fighting drugs (the old DEA), and battling terrorism.
By appointing someone who knows nothing about terrorism but everything about immigration, Obama has signaled the lack of priority he will give to domestic efforts to keep us safe.
Imagine if President George W. Bush had named the governor of Arizona as his Homeland Security director when the post was created in the aftermath of 9/11! The nation would have howled in protest. But now that nobody is focused on terrorism (except the terrorists who still want to strike at us), Obama has felt free to bury the task of battling terrorism in the bureaucracy dedicated to policing the Mexican border.
Just as troubling is Obama's appointment of Eric Holder as his attorney general. While criticism of the nomination has focused, justifiably, on Holder's sellout of the public interest by recommending the pardon of fugitive Marc Rich, it is his approval of commutations for the FALN — the Puerto Rican terrorists — that should raise red flags.
Before 9/11, when we were not hyper-sensitive to terrorism, Holder did Hillary Clinton's bidding in approving the pardon of those who bombed Fraunces Tavern in New York City, killing four people and injuring 50 others. Facing a run for Senate in New York State, with its sizable Puerto Rican population, Hillary was anxious to deliver a signal of her empathy with the desires of New York's Hispanics.
Bill, eager to please, sought Justice Department approval for the commutations. Even though the prisoners themselves had not asked for commutation (two refused to accept it), Holder approved the action and cleared the way for a pre-election gift to New York's Puerto Rican community.
If these two appointments presage Obama's approach to the war on terror, we are going to be in deep trouble, indeed. There is not a hawk in the bunch.
Add to the mix that this is the first president/secretary of state combo that has no combined experience in foreign policy since Woodrow Wilson appointed William Jennings Bryan in 1912, and we face real danger.
Past presidents with no foreign experience have had the wisdom to appoint secretaries of state with significant experience in international relations. Truman had Byrnes and Gen. Marshall. Johnson had Dean Rusk. Carter had Cyrus Vance. Reagan had Al Haig and George Schultz. Clinton had Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright.
Each reached out to supplement their lack of experience, but not Obama. The appointment of Hillary Clinton does nothing to remedy Obama's inexperience and the appointments of Holder and Napolitano indicate that terrorism in general is a low priority for the upcoming administration

The mainstream media's support for Barack Obama's presidential campaign was so biased that even major insiders are now admitting they were shocked by its depth and depravity.
Last week, Time magazine's Mark Halperin called the media's performance during the campaign simply "disgusting."
Halperin told a panel of media analysts at the Politico/USC conference on the 2008 election, "It's the most disgusting failure of people in our business since the Iraq war."
He added, "It was extreme bias, extreme pro-Obama coverage."
According to the Web site Politico, Halperin, who edits Time's political site "The Page," zeroed in on two New York Times articles near the end of the campaign that profiled both Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama.
"The story about Cindy McCain was vicious," Halperin said. "It looked for every negative thing they could find about her and it cast her in an extraordinarily negative light. It didn't talk about her work, for instance, as a mother for her children, and they cherry-picked every negative thing that's ever been written about her."
But the Times gave Michelle Obama red carpet treatment, "like a front-page endorsement of what a great person Michelle Obama is."
Halperin, a former ABC News political director, allowed that some of the press coverage simply reflected the extreme efficiency of Obama's presidential campaign.
"You do have to take into account the fact that this was a remarkable candidacy," Halperin said. "There were a lot of good stories. He was new."
Obama also had a lot of money and outspent Republican John McCain by more than 2 to 1.
The press never bothered to hold Obama accountable for reneging on his promise to use public financing. McCain kept his promise to do so.
During the campaign, conservatives criticized the pro-Obama coverage, but it had little effect.
Columnist David Limbaugh noted: "Never has that been clearer than in the 2008 presidential election, during which they are covering up rather than covering Barack Obama's shady past and alliances, his knee-deep involvement in corrupt practices threatening the very core of our democratic system, and his many policy misrepresentations."
Limbaugh noted that the press went into a tizzy over Sarah Palin's wardrobe, but ignored extravagances like Obama's "obscenely idolatrous million-dollar Greek coliseum mirage."
Now that the election is over, Halperin is not alone in admitting the bias. The Washington Post's ombudsman recently conceded that the paper's coverage was skewed strongly in favor of Obama and against the McCain-Palin ticket.

General VoNguyen Giap
General Giap was a brilliant, highly respected leader
of the North Vietnam military. The following quote
is from his memoirs currently found in the
Vietnam war memorial in Hanoi:
'What we still don't understand is why you Americans
stopped the bombing of Hanoi . You had us on the
ropes. If you had pressed us a little harder,
just for another day or two, we were ready
to surrender! It was the same at the
battles of TET. You defeated us!
We knew it, and we thought
you knew it.
But we were elated to notice your media was definitely
helping us. They were causing more disruption in
America than we could in the battlefields. We
were ready to surrender. You had won!'
General Giap has published his memoirs and confirmed
what most Americans knew. The Vietnam war was not
lost in Vietnam -- it was lost at home. The exact
same slippery slope, sponsored by the US media,
is currently well underway. It exposes the
enormous power of a Biased Media to
cut out the heart and will of
the American public.
A truism worthy of note: ... Do not fear the enemy, for
they can take only your life. Fear the media far more, for
they will destroy your honor.

1. Obama's Coattails Surprisingly Short
While Barack Obama won a resounding electoral vote victory in the presidential race, Democrats did not score the impressive gains nationwide that might have been expected.
Democrats gained five state legislative chambers — the New York Senate, Nevada Senate, Delaware House, Ohio House, and Wisconsin Assembly.
But they lost four others to the GOP — the Tennessee House and Senate, Montana Senate, and Oklahoma Senate, National Journal magazine reported.
According to Tim Storey of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Democrats picked up about 100 state legislative seats, "about half the normal turnover."
Democrats will gain at least 17 seats in the U.S. House and at least five in the Senate, fewer than party insiders had hoped for in recent weeks.
Charlie Cook of National Journal offered several possible reasons for the Democrats' performance on Election Day: A large number of first-time and younger voters went to the polls this year, and it could be that they did not venture past the presidential choice on their ballot. Some voters may have chosen to keep Republican incumbents in place to prevent Democrats from gaining complete control in Washington. Since Democrats had gained so many seats in 2006, they were defending many seats in districts previously held by Republicans.
In any case, Cook concludes, "What happened down-ballot was not proportional to what happened at the top."

2. Meg Whitman May Run for Calif. Governor
Former eBay chief Meg Whitman is mulling a run to replace California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger when he leaves office in two years.
Whitman supported Mitt Romney's presidential campaign until he dropped out of the race, then joined John McCain's campaign as a national co-chair. She spoke at this year's GOP convention, and was mentioned by McCain as a possible Treasury secretary.
The 52-year-old Republican was eBay's chief executive officer when she stepped down from the post after 10 years at the online shopping company. She remains an eBay director.
New York-born Whitman, who now lives in Atherton, Calif., has hired a Sacramento public relations firm and retained Steve Schmidt, the GOP strategist who ran McCain's campaign and managed Schwarzenegger's re-election bid in 2006, the Los Angeles Times reports.
She has never held elected office, but with a net worth of at least $1.4 billion, she could finance her own campaign.
Whitman is not alone in eyeing the governor's mansion, however. Other would-be candidates are preparing, either openly or behind the scenes, to run in 2010, according to the Times.
They include Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, former Republican congressman Tom Campbell, and Steve Poizner, the state's insurance commissioner. All four have formed exploratory committees to raise money for a possible campaign.
Former Gov. Jerry Brown, the state's current attorney general, is also said to be considering a run.
The "wild card" is Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who is contemplating a run as well, the Times disclosed, observing, "She would vault to the head of the field, analysts say, but may be reluctant to leave the Senate with her party newly dominant in favor of a campaign to run a deficit-plagued state and deal with a polarized legislature."
Asked which potential candidate had the best odds of replacing him, Gov. Schwarzenegger last month named Democrat Brown, speculating that Feinstein would decide not to run.
He said Brown "can reach the Republicans and Democrats and bring different people together."

3. Al-Qaida Seeks New Bases in Africa
Although hobbled by the killings or arrests of its senior leaders, al-Qaida is actively seeking to establish new bases in Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, and Somalia.
Germany's head of intelligence, Ernst Uhrlau, said the group has entered a new, decentralized phase, with a strategy of exploiting regional conflicts.
He warned that al-Qaida posed a particular threat in North Africa, due in part to its geographic proximity to Europe.
In September, al-Qaida operatives kidnapped and beheaded 11 soldiers and a civilian in Mauritania. Last December, it claimed responsibility for bombings at the U.N. headquarters and a court in Algeria, according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies' Transnational Threats Update.
As Newsmax reported earlier, al-Qaida, which gets its money from the drug trade in Afghanistan and supporters in the oil-rich Gulf states, is likely to escape the effects of the global financial crisis, largely because the organization has been forced to avoid using banks.
The Update also disclosed that the American embassy in London will be relocated due to security concerns. Ambassador to Britain Robert Tuttle said the embassy's central location in Grosvenor Square cannot reasonably accommodate required security upgrades.
Since 2000, more than 60 new embassies and other facilities overseas have been constructed to meet more stringent security requirements.

4. Obama Pokes Fun at Foul-Mouthed Rahm Emanuel
Three-year-old footage has emerged showing Barack Obama poking fun at Rahm Emanuel, the Illinois congressman the president-elect has now chosen as his chief of staff.
The footage of a 2005 celebrity roast of Emanuel — a fundraiser hosted by Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy — was recently rebroadcast by C-SPAN.
At the podium, Obama told the gathering, "It's great that we can all come together and do something that makes everybody feel better, which is to insult Rahm Emanuel."
He went on to say, "Some of you may know that Rahm's brother Ari is the model for the lead character on the big hit on HBO, 'Entourage.' What you may not know is that Rahm himself in the inspiration for that other HBO character, Tony Soprano."
When it was Hillary Clinton's turn to speak, she said, "When was the last time Rahm spoke for more than five minutes without using a curse word?"
And she declared, "Rahm scares us all."
Obama also alluded to Emanuel's penchant for foul language: "He was working at a deli. There was an accident with a meat-slicing machine. He lost part of his middle finger. As a result, this rendered him practically mute
Miltary at Christmas
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty yearsold,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife, and my child.
"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts…
The window that danced with a warm fire's light,
Then he sighed and he said "It's really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."
"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas Gram' always remembers.
My Dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am…
Iv'e not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue… An American flag.
"I can live through the cold, and being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother…
Who stand at the frin against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."
"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting, and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least"
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled,
Is payment enough… and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Underwood finally writes a country song
All dressed in white
Going to the church that night
She had his box of letter in the passenger seat
Six pence in her shoe
Something borrowed, something blue
And when the church doors opened up wide
She put her veil down trying to hide the tears
Oh she just couldnt believe it
She heard the trumpets from the military band
And the flowers laying in her hands
Baby, why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
I cant even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
The preacher man said lets bow our head and pray
Lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt
Then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song
That she ever heard
Then they handed her a folded up flag
And she held on to all she had left of him
And what could've been
And then guns rang one last shot and it felt like a bullet in her heart
Baby, why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
I cant even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream
Baby, why'd you leave me
Why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever
Now I'll never know
Ooh, Ill never know
It's like I'm, looking from a distance
Standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Obama to mark Veterans Day with wreath-laying (AP)
* Yahoo! News
Made Popular: 1 hour 53 min ago - AP - President-elect Obama planned to honor fallen troops Tuesday, taking a short break from his primary task of mapping out his administration to mark Veterans Day.
November 11th
The Marine stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Marine,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Marine waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, you Marine,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
