McKenna AND Ryan Show Disregard for Illinois Voters

We know where Andy McKenna stands on at least one issue - a lack of regard for the voters in this election.

We had a good, healthy debate at a candidates forum this morning, but Mr. McKenna refused to answer my questions and ultimately responded that he didn't respect me enough to answer my question. That's fine, I don't need Andy McKenna's respect. But when asked whether he respected the audience enough to respond, he stood silent.

He also again refused to respond to my questions about whether he would reimburse the Illinois Republican Party $28,000 for his improper use of party funds for his own political gain.

Mr. McKenna apparently only respects his insider friends in Chicago who are helping fund his television commercials. Apparently he has little regard for those of us from Downstate Illinois.

We need candidates who are open and honest with the voters, candidates who don't duck debates and don't hedge their positions on the tough issues facing Illinois.

Last month Mr. McKenna refused to rule out the possibility of a tax increase. Yet, days before he launched his latest television commercial, he signed a pledge to not raise taxes, the same pledge I have consistently supported.

We don't need more doubletalk. Which is it, Mr. McKenna? And why won't you explain your switch in positions to the voters of Illinois?

Jim Ryan, another of my opponents, also doesn't like to talk about his close connection with Stuart Levine, who contributed nearly $800,000 to Mr. Ryan's previous campaign and who has now pleaded guilty in the Blagojevich corruption scandal.

The citizens of Illinois deserve candidates who are honest with them, who show up at candidate forums and are willing to answer the tough questions voters have. They need to know where the candidates stand. Silence is not an answer.
