Dear Fellow American:
Would you ever have believed that you and all Americans would be forced to serve as shareholders of General Motors? Well, thanks to President Obama, we now are . . .
. . . We can call it Government Motors because the federal government owns 70 percent of this once private enterprise company.
And in the same sneaky way, the government has plans for a takeover of health-care. The liberals learned from their defeat of Bill Clinton's proposed takeover of health-care in 1994 that they can't just hijack the system all at once.
President Obama has said repeatedly that the purpose of his health-care reform plan is to cut health-care costs, which currently consume about 17 percent of GDP.
President Obama, Sen. Harry Reid, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and their liberal friends in Congress believe that if government were to take over health-care and guarantee health-care for all Americans, they could reduce that cost by at least 50 percent.
Yes, they could - but only by restricting access and drastically cutting back on the amount of health-care Americans could receive. And that means rationing.
Their plan is to sneak Socialized Medicine through Congress within the next few months. And that is why they must hear from you immediately. I need you to:
1) Fill out NTU's VOTER BALLOT.
2) Make a donation to help NTU STOP this attempt to Socialize our medical care cold.
Under the Obama plan of Socialized Medicine, health-care would effectively become a welfare benefit for all Americans. And by treating your health-care as a welfare benefit, many of your needs could simply be denied by government-appointed bureaucrats.
A government takeover of America's private health-care system is precisely what President Obama and the liberals in Congress have in mind, unless ordinary citizens like you and me stand up immediately and stop them!
The Washington politicians scheming to pass ObamaCare promise that your health-care would not be limited - that you could continue to choose your own doctor - and that your health-care would not be rationed. DON'T BELIEVE THEM!
This is an impossibility - given the drastic cuts in the cost of U.S. health-care that Obama, Reid, Pelosi and their liberal socialist friends have in mind!
My friend, make no mistake: your health-care - and the health-care of your family, the health-care of everyone - is threatened.
Needed: Health-care Reform Legislation that Works
We do need health-care reform that would make the cost of health-care transparent, cut wasteful bureaucratic expenses, and make health insurance more affordable.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) has introduced legislation that would accomplish these objectives. His Health Care Freedom Act (S. 1324) would assure that your health-care would not be rationed and ensure that your ability to select your doctor could not be compromised, all while cutting the health-care bureaucracy and reducing costs.
DeMint's health-care reform would put patients in charge of purchasing decisions, strengthen the doctor-patient relationship, improve quality, and reduce prices. And this legislation would not cost the taxpayer one red cent. The DeMint legislation would:
- Expand and strengthen Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which eliminate costly insurance bureaucracies and make health-care insurance more affordable for many. Health-care providers would be required to charge those covered by HSAs no more than what they get paid by traditional insurance companies or Medicare.
- Turn the health insurance market - currently a patchwork of irrational state regulations - into a nationwide market. Allow families to shop for health policies across state lines - choosing from a wide variety of plans to fit specific family needs.
- Allow those who do not receive health insurance through their employer to deduct health insurance premiums from their taxes.
Along with his plan to reduce the amount spent in the United States on health-care - cutting it by more than 50 percent - Obama also wants to insure the 18 million families that are not covered by a health-care policy.
NTU agrees with the President on the goal, if not the way to reach it. By reducing the cost of health insurance, the DeMint health-care reform legislation could significantly reduce the number of uninsured. Those still not covered by health insurance could be covered by reforming state-sponsored Medicaid programs - and this would be the straight-forward approach. It could be more cost-effective than treating these uninsured families at our nation's emergency rooms, as is now the case. Ultimately the consumer covered with health insurance ends up paying for the uninsured anyway.
Sen. DeMint's thoughtful approach would certainly be preferable to putting every American citizen on welfare - as Obama and his liberal friends in Congress are planning to do.
Not needed: ObamaCare
The President thinks that passage of his version of Socialized Medicine is a foregone conclusion - and again that is why I must get your opinion through your VOTER BALLOT and your contribution just as soon as possible.
He is so sure that it will pass this summer that his budget for next year already shows a $300 billion cut from future Medicare and Medicaid spending. They plan to begin by reducing Medicare payments, beginning with cutting what seniors know as Medicare Advantage - the plan that pays for such items as prescription drugs, vision care, and chiropractic care.
Only a massive grassroots uprising can stop Obama's runaway train . . .
. . . so please help the National Taxpayers Union stop Barack Obama, Sen. Harry Reid, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi from "managing" your medical care.

The liberals are smarter than they were in the early 1990s when NTU helped defeat a similar socialized medicine plan proposed by Hillary and Bill Clinton.
They learned from their defeat in the 1990s - they learned to keep their plans hidden from the American public until after their legislation is passed into law.
This time around, I am sure that they will attempt to pass a skeleton version - with details to be filled in by "Executive Order," and administrative rules. They are planning on passing what Obama has described as his "downpayment on health-care."
It is this "skeleton" ObamaCare plan that we must have your help in defeating. And fortunately, we already know the scary details of Obama's plan for socialized medicine because . . .
. . . those details were revealed as a result of a lawsuit filed against the Task Force that wrote the Clinton plan.
Thus I am able to share details of the Clinton plan that in one form or another will be in ObamaCare. So here in a nutshell is what President Obama, Sen. Reid, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi have in mind for you and your family:
- Restricting your freedom to choose your own doctor and insurance;
- Rationing your health-care by limiting certain types of care, such as expensive cancer treatments, certain X-ray procedures, treatment for chronic back pain, and other help for the very sick and the very old;
- Providing free health-care as an additional welfare benefit, at a cost of more than $1 trillion over the next decade ... to be paid for by restricting your health-care and of course drastically increasing your taxes!
Socialized medicine exists in England and Canada. In these countries, patients wait up to six months for surgical procedures such as cardiac bypass, and more than one and one-half years for a hip replacement.
As you may know, assisted suicide is legal in the state of Oregon - and the way Oregon residents are treated is illustrative of how you could be eventually treated under socialized medicine in America.
A patient in Oregon with an aggressive cancer was denied funds to pay for expensive chemotherapy drugs. However, in denying coverage, the patient was told that payment could be provided for palliative care and assisted suicide.
It's a question of philosophy. Socialized Medicine, the change that Obama thinks everyone voted for would mandate that some people - the elderly, and the terminally ill - should not have money spent to keep them alive ... just enough to keep them comfortable.
In this way, ObamaCare would indeed drastically reduce the amount spent on health-care in the United States. It's a question of who shall live and who shall die. If you believe that decision should be made by government, you should support ObamaCare.
But if you oppose government deciding who should live and who should die - then you must oppose ObamaCare with every fiber in your body.
And while you're at it, phone your U.S. Senators at (202) 224-3121. Give them this message: Keep your hands off of my health-care! They are more impressed by their voters' demands if their switchboard is ringing off the hook!
With your VOTER BALLOT and your donation, you have the power to help stop Obama's plan of socialized medicine and pass health-care reform that is truly needed.
Obama's only hope is to slide his socialized medicine plan of government health-care through Congress before consumers realize what it is all about. This is why we have to act - immediately.
