DALLAS - Someone is targeting the red, white and blue in a North Dallas neighborhood.

Resident and military veteran Ed Jordan was running errands early Monday morning when he returned home around 7 a.m. to find the U.S. and Marine Corps flags hanging outside his home were gone.

"When I saw the charred flagpole... with the shrubs burned and everything, I realized they'd set the flags on fire," Jordan said.

There are only ashes left, along with shriveled-up pieces of the flag which the 70-year-old veteran refuses to throw away.

He says both flags have sentimental value to him, since he spent three years in the Marines and six years in the Marine Corps Reserves.

"I was in shock," he said, looking at the burned azalea bushes outside his home. "I thought, 'Why would someone do this?'"

Just a few homes away in the Preston Valley Villas, another resident had her American flag burned with in just the last few days.

But both that woman and Ed Jordan plan on replacing their flags before the July 4 holiday weekend.

Down the block, another neighbor who is aware of both acts of vandalism is proudly and defiantly flying her Stars and Stripes, although it's embedded in a thorny bed of roses.

"I love my country," said resident Lila Katz. "This is a brand-new flag I bought at Costco, and it's the most expensive one I ever bought. If ever someone would do something to my flag, I'm gonna be very upset."

Katz is so patriotic, she has stars and stripes painted on her finger and toenails. It's no wonder: her birthday is July 5.

She is fiercely protecting her favorite holiday, and issuing a warning to the person torching flags in her neighborhood.

"Stay away from us," she said. "Stop burning the American flag. You must have something better to do with your life than destroy something so beautiful."
